Which delivery system you select is based on the principle that

    1. not all the lessons should be taught in  the same way.
      -and-
    2. that certain teaching strategies work better than others in determined circumstances.

    Factors:

    • the lesson goals
    • the scope and sequence of the lessons,
    • the availability and quality of resources,
    • the background and attributes of the learners.

    Goals:

    • What are the are the intended behaviors, attitudes, social, and/or cognitive outcomes?
    • These all tied to objectives and intended outcomes

    Scope & Sequence:

    • Not all content areas are efficiently taught by all delivery methods.. For example, reviews may be best done through simulations & games, but may not be appropriate for initial introduction of materials.

    Learner Attributes:

    • Differing learning styles and/or abilities and skill levels (i.e. reading levels).
    • Non-motivated learners do not respond well in the independent study formats.

    Availability and quality of resources:

    • This includes, time, materials, money, and size of room where instruction is delivered.

    Other Considerations:

    • Schedules
    • Cost limit
    • Group size
    • Available technology
    • Is distance learning a possibility?

    Resource Considerations

    • The most precious resource to consider is time…. (how much is available for both the lesson and the planning)
    • Student population is made up of many different learning types… a lot of hype about “learning styles”
    • Less is more (KISS method)

    Overriding determinations in successful implementation:

    • Instructors must be able to comprehend the system that they are trying to implement (know how and why it works).
    • They should be able to visualize the system (be able to clearly define teacher and student responsibilities).
    • They need to have the capability of adopting the system (for example devising an evaluation instrument that properly reflects the goals of the curriculum), or and/or adapting it (i.e., making adjustments to suit the needs of the class and be conversant in its implementation).

    Categories of Delivery Systems

    • Independent Study (little or no outside influence.. Focuses on individual)
    • Small Group Interaction (peer group interaction, security)
    • Large Group Presentations (learner requires outside influence from someone in authority).

    Delivery Styles

    • Self-paced modules
    • Textbooks/workbooks
    • Computer-based Instruction
    • Audio Packages
    • Multimedia
    • Contract Learning
    • Personalized System of Instruction

Small Group Interaction  (Learners are influenced by their peers)

    • Discussions
    • Panel Discussions
    • Group Investigation
    • Case Studies
    • Role Play
    • Simulations
    • Games
    • Cooperative Learning

Large Group (Focuses on economies of scale and efficiencies)

    • Lectures
    • Multimedia
    • Distance Learning
